About the event
One of the least visited areas of Fort Donelson National Battlefield is Maney’s Battery, perched atop the high ground that separates Indian Creek from Erin Holow. This high ground, and Maney’s battery itself, was the target of an attack by elements of John McClernand’s First Division on February 13th, 1862. Due to limited space for vehicles, we will meet Tour Stop 7 (Graves’ Battery), then carpool to a pulloff along Sandy Road and layout the movements and positions within Indian Creek valley before starting our hike up to Maney’s position, where we will detail the fighting that took place in the area.
The climb to Maney’s position is a steep but short approach. Be prepared for a bit of exercise, but we will also stop during the climb to layout the Confederate defenses and aloow folks to catch their breath.
The tour is led by Darryl Smith, author of The War Department Tablets of Fort Donelson National Battlefield. It is a part of the Fort Donelson Symposium, being held on February 22nd at the Stewart County Visitor Center.
